Minčia S1 #10 Glacier, Yoho ir Banff nacionaliniai parkai, sušlubavusi sveikata ir prisiviję šalčiai

New

July 6

Giving and freedom

New

Aug 12, 2025

View post

Yoga teaches that love has two intrinsic qualities: one is giving, the other is freedom.

Yet to love by giving without expecting anything in return, and without becoming attached to the beloved, is true mastery.

The best teacher of this is family life, especially raising children: in caring for them, we learn to give without expecting anything back. It is like planting a tree knowing you will never see it reach full maturity.

And eventually, there comes a moment when we must split— first for a short time, and later, forever. This realization inspires us to cherish what we have here and now, to appreciate and treasure it, because time will pass and never return.

During this almost 300-days-long journey one thing became much clearer to me, the meaning and importance of which I had not previously properly appreciated, it’s the ability to rely on one another. One thing is to come up with an idea, and it is quite the other to deal with all the challenges you encounter later. However, having a partner who you know you can rely on when needed gives you an indescribable amount of power, even when your strength or patience are exhausted.

Breaking out of stagnation

There’s a bag in the top shelve with our tent inside. We haven’t opened it for 46 days. Is it still there? Is the tent dry and OK?

First day passes as quick as a lightning bolt. At 8 PM it’s dark already, so we lay in our OK tent, kids asleep, parents not so much - scrolling, looking at screens.

A disturbing feeling to leave one’s “home” once again. A box with a door and a key, where you can hide from wind and people and undress, where you store your food, close the curtains and binge watch Netflix. My head and chest is hammering with stress today and here I am forgetting and losing things again. Breathe in, breathe out, and transfer the money for cash out to the other account. “Your bank app PIN code has been blocked.” What now? I never even use a PIN. Did I press something with my absent fingers?

You’ve probably been there too.

Breathe in, breathe out, put the kids into the trailer and roll. They like the warm wind, roaring at street dogs and observing the city. It feels like I’m coming back into my body, pedaling helps to recycle that intensity into something better, more useful and anchoring.

Do we have a plan for tomorrow? Well, it depends.

If by the time we’ll have had our breakfast a man we spoke to shows up with an empty pickup, we’ll pack quickly and go with him to La Paz. If not, we’ll refill our water, food and diaper supplies and start cycling the longest straight line in Mexico. It will take us 5 to 6 days.

The morning after tomorrow we have a significant Zoom meeting to help decide the fate of this journey. Will we be calling out of La Paz or the desert? Will kids be awake or sleeping? And what decisions will be made? We will wait and see.

Discipline

New

Mar 8, 2025

View post

Just as the calling to set out on the road came from within, so the entire journey, from the very first kilometers, continues as an internal test of strength and a constant rediscovery of oneself. This lifestyle, compared to the more usual everyday life of living at home, has more time for introspection, concentration, and developing the desired skills.

What a wonderful and useful thing nowadays is discipline. It's a shame, but it seems to me that so many people either do not fully understand or underestimate the importance of this phenomenon. I make such assumption by seeing the growing comfort of our lives that equally grows the number of obese and ill people, or the ones suffering from depression (laziness and self-pity). Good health, mood, work accomplishments, relationships and even one's inner happiness largely depends on self-discipline.

Most of us understand how closely our health is related to the foods we intake and our eating habits, and despite that we still overeat and use products that are not good for us or even toxic. Without going deeper into emotional problems that are usually behind it, we can simply name it as a lack of willpower or inability to resist temptation.

Same thing can be applied when talking about relationships. Wanting to live happily and at ease with another person one needs skills of planing one's time, distributing it correctly and ensuring that both sides are content in their game of endless deals, sharing of duties and promises. The closer is the relationship, the more time, dedication and involvement it requires. Without willpower and responsibility all the things mentioned above can make one's life annoyingly complicated. I mentioned responsibility here for a reason, after the discipline gives birth to volition witch involves keeping ones word, promise and decision, that are finally going to stand as a cornerstone and meet the tests of time. If self-discipline in our daily lives could be equated with small, seemingly insignificant actions or their absence, then willpower could be compared to the implementation of a long-term, precise plan with many components or vow. I'll use one Lithuanian saying, that perfectly describes this situation, only in this case it wont sound as profound: success comes from sequence. In English language the right order would probably be this: seek - sequence - success.

The good news here is that just as we can sometimes be intimidated by the thought of big, long-term commitments, same way the development of small, simple habits can grow into a powerful force that brings us inner strength, satisfaction, and confidence. For that we need to create a little bit of distance, a space (prepare the soil) in your daily life, where attention is drawn from the outside inward. In that space a seed nourished over a long period of time with devotion, humility, and continuous effort can sprout into a tree that will later bear any desired fruit, both internal and external.

Inner journey

Adventures teach us to adapt ourselves to circumstances and in a long adventure a very handy skill becomes the ability to relax at will and trust the flow. Otherwise it might get very tiring, because the constant stress keeps waisting the energy that is necessary to accomplish the tasks. We are lucky to have started practising it before getting into this trip. Now it has become a very helpful tool on the daily basis for encountering tense, unpleasant or dangerous situations and also just for letting go of the unnecessary believes, attachments and all the negative mental load, that has accumulated trough time.

The skill of relaxation is highly important not only while traveling, these days it is a must for staying healthy on all levels: physically, emotionally and mentally, knowing how crazy fast the routine can get for most of us nowadays. In the relationship it can also save a lot of time and energy while reaching agreements or arguing.

It is strange, or not, that we have not received this incredibly important knowledge at school, probably it was left for parents to deal with, witch is also strange, knowing that more than half of marriages end up in divorce.

When people ask how do the kids react to the journey we are at, do they like it, he first thought that pops into mind is this one. By being conscious of the importance of the first couple of years in a life of a baby and also it's impact on all it's future development we chose to spend our time the way we do now. We are learning these skills that all of us are supposed to have, but by irresponsibility and wrong upbringing we did not attain it. Like a house with bad foundation is later going to need more and more investment, a man without basic knowledge how to eat, sleep, sit, eat, relax, train, deal with tension... later on is going to experience more suffering.

An answer to the question how they feel we will probably receive only a little bit later. However, I have seen how from the first weeks their behaviour and relationship with the environment has changed, how brave and self-confident they have became. Apparently, it is not only the parents who experience challenges on the road.

Probably the strongest instinct in men is that of becoming happy, knowing that the unhappy person can commit suicide, which proves that it is even stronger than that of survival. I am very thankful and happy of having a chance to create my children the opportunity to grow internally from such a young age, knowing that the growth is the necessary condition of happiness.

New ideas come to mind

New

Feb 21, 2025

View post

It’s now been more than 2 months in México. For the first time in this journey we have stoped for a longer period of time, which gave us a possibility to digest all the impressions we’ve collected and to reflect on it for a bit.

Just a few days ago we found ourselves talking about staying somewhere for longer and maybe making ourselves comfortable there, which have never happened before. There are two reasons why we thought so. The first one - we have all that is the most important and valuable for us and everything that is necessary to survive, and the other one - we are not sure if it is worth to go back to the tension that our country is living in for some time now.

In this travelling time we have learned a lot. This new lifestyle brought us some new space in the mind also. A few alien ideas came about and probably some sentimental attachments have fallen away. Anyways, as it’s so new and unfamiliar to us yet, we do not make any quick decisions and we’ll see how and where does it go.

Shocking new reality

New

Nov 15, 2024

View post

Tonight we’re at Avenal - small town in between farms. 5 out of 10K of it’s population are inmates at the Avenal State Prison. Not the first big prison we pass in Cali.

Yesterday evening we went to the Police Departament in another town to ask for permition to camp in a public park. NO. We went to church to ask them, NO, but they insisted to buy us a night in a shabby motel.

“Do you have dogs or something?” - motel lady knocks on our door and is pointing at the kids playing with the TV remote on the floor. At first I think it’s a good joke. “Do not give it to him! You will pay! And keep room clean!” she continues.

It’s starting to become more clear why people seem unfriendly here in Cali. There’s a lot of homelessnes and addiction. Bums go around with bikes and trailers just like us. People see us and usually turn their eyes away.

After coming down from Sierra-Nevada every night in this desert-like farm grid seems like the final challenge. Every inch of land is either a driveway, a crop, a sprinkler or a fence. Nights go by calculating if the tractor plowing the field is going to reach our tent by the morning, sleeping by the fence, in the dump site, hunting site, tresspassing.

California doesn’t give us a chance to rest as we used to, Girė naps less, we move painfully slow. It reminds me of the first months in Canada when we would start the day at 4-5AM and the lack of sleep made me miserable. Remembering that, I see that it isn’t as bad now, so why does this period feel so terrible still?

There’s a new word in my vocabulary: loitering. I’ve seen many signs that say “no loitering” lately and never translated it, I thought it must mean something bad. Turns out it’s exactly what we are doing in front of those signs: hanging out without apparent purpose, traveling slowly with many pauses, occupying space basically. I guess our life now is all loitering. And it’s illegal in this part of the world, and it’s illegal to sleep outside too, and nature is at somebody’s ownership.

It’s heartwarming to be fed. But it is different when people in the street give us their leftover pizzas.

Such mixed feelings today: scorn for the progressive world and complete humility and insignificance at the face of women we met today - a story for another post.

Central California, not exactly the way we have imagined it

New

Nov 13, 2024

View post

It’s now the sixth month on the road. At the moment we are amidst central California’s farms and are about to cross the mountains that separate us from the ocean. There we plan to find some safe space to rest for a bit and continue moving down towards Mexico.

We haven’t rested for 3 weeks because the conditions here are not good for that. Up in the mountains it was too cold and down here it’s all fenced working fields. A lot of homeless, so it’s prohibited to camp anywhere in the town, there are no established campgrounds either, because there is nothing to do apart from farming in this desert. There are no rivers or lakes, only the reservoirs of dirty water and that makes our routine even harder. We have to carry lots of water and cannot go too far away from the towns because we need to get the refills and supplies quite often. The dust, sand, plowed land and the endless tree farms surrounds us and there is a cloud of dust and dung over our heads, at least it protects us from the sunshine a bit.

Slowly we are getting more and more tired, that obviously affects our patience and in the end the general mood of all four.

The church became one of the most reliable options for spending the night safely and for the first time in my life I actually feel the help of Jesus, because it comes in the very obvious and concrete way. Today again, we stay in a trailer under reconstruction that belongs to a Christian woman that we met while hanging by the gas station. She is an ex prostitute that her dad started raping and selling to his fellow truck drivers from the early childhood. She was introduced to drugs at the age of 9 and later spend many years in the streets doing heroin and other hard ones. However, now she offers her help with a huge smile and even bigger open heart. After hearing some of her stories and having a dinner with her family all our problems just faded away and the tiredness vanished.

Isn’t that crazy how sometimes we get irritated or even angry so easily. The triggers might not be of a big deal at all, but we might carry the unsatisfaction through the day. Some bad sleep or the food that wasn’t good enough might blindly close our eyes to the thousands of presents that we get every day.

That’s how colourful our days are at this point. We don’t plan too far ahead, living one day at the time we just solve all the challenges that the day brings us. We try not to get too tired, sincerely thank for the food, not necessarily perfect, that we got and always thank for the safe shelter when the morning comes.

A little detour

New

Nov 11, 2024

View post

OK. So we are in the center of Utah - a small town called Levan (“navel” spelled backwards), it’s getting dark, the park gate is closed. We find a way around the fence and set camp. No luck finding the sprinklers, we’ll have to improvise later, too tired to deal with it now.

I guess it’s 2AM? My idea to put crocs on them doesn’t work, these sprinklers shoot over 10 meter diameter. We fight them with the park’s trash containers and hope there will be no flood under the tent as there’s so much water!

In the morning on our way Liudvikas pops into the gas station to fill the gasoline bottles for the stove. Prepaying 1 dollar and explaining it to the cashier takes time. As he is doing that an old gentleman approaches me and the kids to chat, later he will catch up with us on the highway to bring some really good apples. And then catch up with us one more time in the windy Painted Rocks campground to exchange facebook details.

Fast forward a few days and we are in Joseph. We are surprised with a nice emptyish caravan site with wi-fi and showers, and wait there for Dylan. He’s bringing us new tires, cash, bread and buckwheat from Salt Lake on his way to Arizona Trail Race. We find his Ford van next to the tent in the morning.

“Want some camp coffee?”

“Never turn down a gift,” says Dylan, but passes the coffe to his friend.

In Joseph we also meet Wade and Buddy. Just as we are about to leave two men spot us in the gas station picnic area.

“Hey guys! You look like you’re on a big adventure. I love adventures! Which way are you headed?”

We exchange contacts and agree to meet in St. George in a week and maybe join them for a daytrip to the Grand Canyon. Little do we know, a cold front is bringing snow into this desert in a few days.

We cycle further, it is suddenly freezing in here, headwind is slowing us down to 15 miles per day. People start noticing us with the kids in this weather: a mother with two children buys us a night in a motel, a motorhome with a trailer finds a place to turn around and invite us inside for a hot chocollate and gift us two more nights somewhere warm.

We end up calling Wade to pick us up on his way to St. George. He has a van and is prepared to pack all of our stuff and drop us off at Zion National Park. All campgrounds say “FULL” and “reserved” a few months in advance, but we do what we always do - find an empty spot. We spend a couple of days there waiting for the Grand Canyon detour - of course@@@ we signed up for it!

It turns out Wade loves adventure so much that he wants to take us, Buddy and his Sprinter on an ultimate roadtrip.

“What do you want to see? Let’s go to LA and stop anywhere on the way!”

“Is Death Valley and Sequoia National Park on the way?” says Liudvikas.

“Yeah, it’s really close!”

Four days of driving close.

So we prepare for first night at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Next one - Las Vegas, third - Death Valley, last - Yosemite.

It’s a taking turns driving, rolling with kids on the floor in the back of the van, sleeping in the bunk bed kind of trip. And the last day presents us with some unexpected mountain pass closings to go arround and up and down Sierra-Nevada multiple times.

We even managed to find wild hot springs on the way, a thing on my bucket list since Canada. I just didn’t imagine I would be cooling down after one in a plain desert midday sun.

We have to let Wade go home, there’s a 10-12 hour drive still to get to Salt Lake through Nevada. It’s Haloween and moving day pressing things into a schedule, otherwise we would continue and continue I guess.

What a teleport to experience. Sun, dust, fall, snow in a matter of hours. Crowned with stunning Yosemite granite walls. Goosebumps! My body is here at Camp 4, soul still trying to catch up, maybe stuck on that Ebbetts Pass caught in snow and slow serpantine traffic. Future holds a journey to LA to pick up Liudve’s new bike. Let’s see how we are going to make this one.

137 day - how does it feel to be pathetic

New

Oct 21, 2024

View post

In the middle of the fifth month we got caught by the autumn and also the tiredness. The patience is not as solid as it was before and the smile doesn't shine on our faces as often since it got cold and wind became chilly. Anyhow, the coincidences keep coming around reminding us the purpose of the journey and don't let us get bored.

Last week we were fighting headwind that slowed us down at least twice. We couldn't make it and climb over the mountains, so we got stuck in the high elevation and the cold front stumbled upon us and brought cold and snow. As usual, when you need it the most (when you are in the right place at the right time), the people around us generously started offering their help. Even tough we are ready and prepared for everything that this journey can bring us, we gladly accepted the offers and here we are, spending the third night in the motel room already.

Accepting the gifts in the beginning was strange and uncomfortable, it makes you feel like you owe something. But as the time passes you start seeing it from a different perspective. It is actually pleasant to get help when you need it, and it's even more pleasant to give help not expecting anything in return. That is how this law works, the gesture of kindness. Someone gives you something and you continue this beautiful journey by helping somebody else, that needs it the most.

These moments are truly inspiring. On the road I really feel how the surroundings is taking care of us. I know this feeling pretty well because I practice it myself. And even though it is familiar to me, I was always thinking how to get my children to know it, because the words can merely describe it. Finally it worked, now they can see and learn it in their everyday life.

Desert

New

Oct 21, 2024

View post

It’s now fifth month that we are on the road and the difference between pedaling the bikes and travelling by more commonly acceptable ways becomes more obvious. Not just the constant contact with the nature or the speed that we move brings its beauty, it’s being open and easily accessible for everyone.

Our home, the tent, so easy to access not only for the animals, but also for any kind of guests, welcome and not so.

On the road we are visible, outstanding, open for the curious ones and probably a bit annoying for the rushing lives living ones, they let us understand that by showing their middle fingers of trying to scare us sometimes. In the city we work as a very good attraction for the ones curious to chat. Luckily most of the people we meet are helpful, supportive and even quite often they offer us at least a meal.

Not having your place opens you up to a completely different view of the surroundings, that you usually don’t get to know while you pass driving a car on the highway.

That needs time, and when you work your pedals it becomes much slower. Just like living in one place you get to know the surroundings, common opinions, culture and the general states of being, in the same way living on the road brings you this direct experience fast and unprocessed. One night you stay with the Mormons, the next some college professor hosts you, then a doctor and so on. That really helps to know the local culture and values.

Having no place is sometimes exciting but might also be scary. At the moment we are in the middle of Utah. Moving deeper in to the desert, the distances between the towns are getting bigger, we meet less people and less cars and also the sunshine is getting more intense. The nights are truly magical here. Once the sun goes down and the wind stops blowing, you get in touch with the silence never experienced before. In its presence the thoughts are more distinct, so simultaneously it becomes clear what is the source of all the sadness, happiness and fear. What slowly opens practicing awareness and mindfulness year after year, here comes naturally and effortlessly.

While preparing for this journey I only wanted to spend my time with the family, I could not expect it to turn in to such an inside adventure of self-knowing, where the trust, simplicity and devotion becomes the best teachers.
